Men's Teen Challenge History |
|
The Lighthouse at Emafini began as a coffee shop in Mbabane in Johnstone Street. A street known for its nine bars. It now has nine churches and no bars. We later moved our residential program down to Emafini. When we began, we had a caravan which graduated into 12 stick and mud houses. The area was a swamp. It was home to mosquitoes and long-drop toilets. It was a mess, but we were thankful for what God had given us. The land was donated for our use by Mbabane Hotels PTY LTD. Improving it to make it fit for human habitation, was the next huge step of faith. However, the program had begun and we were having a nightmare of a time. The students were breaking out of the centre to go out and take drugs, but as we applied the Teen Challenge program to the letter, God used us and the program to change lives. God used us and the program to change lives. The first lives we began to see change were the staff working in the program. Our own lives began to change. The material we use(Teen Challenge) is so effective, it had us all repenting and sorting out our own lives. We had so much baggage of our own. Ask any staff member and you'll find that they learn more from teaching the material than the students do. Ten years later. The program is based on tough love and for some, that is what is really needed. The program which began in 1997 is now more than ten years along and we have seen literally hundreds of lives changed. To that end, we are grateful to God for His mercy and grace. We are thankful to the Lord for Teen Challenge UK who helped walk us through those times and who continue to advise and direct us. Today, Wafuka Kapolesa, Vivi Kalumba and Timothy Makhanya lead the ministry effectively. We now aim to increase our capacity and duplicate what we have done in other parts of the nation, as God directs us. One thing is certain though, we ask God to direct us, because unless we work out of His love, it is all in vain.
