Hawane Craft and Curio Page |
|
Set in the beautiful highlands of Hawane on the road to Piggs Peak, is Hawane Craft & Curio. The shop has an eclectic mix of local and imported curios and jewellery. The main attraction is ceramics, which are made on site. There is a wonderful choice of tiles, both wall and table, tea sets, coffee mugs and bowls of different shapes and sizes. The theme of the pottery is mainly indigenous, with local scenes and wildlife motifs predominating. The potter and artist are given free rein as far as their creativity is concerned, so their wares are unique and distinctive. As there is much soapstone in the area, there are a number of items in this medium by local crafters. There are Swazi heads with much character, animals as well as artistic pieces of sculpture. Some of the same art can be found in wood, including some exciting pieces in ebony from South Africa. For those looking for something more personal there are interesting necklaces from Kenya, mainly made out of bone and beads. There is also a good selection of earrings and rings. On a more local note there are sisal baskets made by destitute people in the drought stricken Lavumisa region of Swaziland and African garments made from boutique and are hand embroidered. All proceeds from the Curio Shop go towards maintaining the children's homes on site. There are even packs of note cards made by the children on sale in the shop. Once you have finished savouring the sensory delights of the Curio Shop, and made your purchases, you can relax with a well-deserved cup of coffee and a muffin or other delectable freshly baked cake. The unit facilitating the craft shop and canteen was originally a packhouse. The funds to improve the unit and stock the craft store was raised in and through Teen Challenge UK, under Pastor John Macey. For further details contact Elaine Smith on (268) 442-4092. |
